God created Adam and Eve and kept them in the Garden of Eden and told them to eat the fruits of all trees except the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil, which was in the midst of the garden. Gen. 2:17, 3:3)
And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil. (Genesis 2:9)
Many preachers believe and preach that God is so kind and merciful, and hence He kept the tree of knowledge of good and evil in the midst, for them to eat in a later day, when they grow sufficiently, eating the fruit of life! They confirm their claim as, God is knowing the good and evil without eating that fruit, and similarly Adam and Eve also will grow sufficiently, and then they will be permitted to eat that fruit of good and evil. They give an example of a child, in whose hands no father will give a sharp knife, lest he hurt himself with the knife. But the father certainly gives him a sharp knife when he grows and capable of handling a sharp knife!
Here let us think and meditate on the word of God. As per their thinking, without eating the fruit of good and evil, God is able to discern good and evil. Then a question arises that man too will acquire the knowledge of good and evil without eating that fruit! Now another question arises that, then why at all did God place the dangerous tree in the midst?
The answer is very simple when we look into the ways of God and what God prefers from man. God does not want the man as machine, which does not have a heart to choose! Whereas God gave man a free will to choose, so that he will decide to choose the right thing and a thing which pleases his Creator, who is loving him and looks upon him, and cares for him continuously, not only in this world but also in the world to come that is heaven or Eternal Habitation.
- Adam and Eve when lived in the Garden of Eden, God gave the commandment what to eat and “what not” to eat. That period was the “Period of Innocence”
- From the day they came out of the garden to the period of Moses was called the “Period of Conscience.” In this period God’s commandment was their conscience which speaks as “Accusing” or “Excusing” (Romans 2:15)
- From Moses to Jesus Christ, the period was called as “Period of Law.” In this period God gave Law of Moses and kept Two Things in front of the Israelites, to choose one. They were “Life” and “Death. Or, “Blessings and “Curse.”
- From Jesus Christ to His Second Coming, the Period is called as “Period of Grace.” Here Jesus Christ kept Two Ways before the people. They are “Broad Way” to Destruction or Hell and “Narrow way” to Life. Or Heaven. (Matt. 7: 13, 14)
From the above four Commandments of God applicable to various period of time, it is very certain that these commandments should never be transgressed at all. “Including the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil. “Hence it is incorrect to say or believe that God kept the forbidden tree in the garden to eat the fruit but in a later day.”
The four points mentioned above are true indeed and God has always tested man’s free will to choose between good and evil. That still does not answer the question why God chose to create a tree with a fruit to test the obedience of man. He could have made a waterfall or river and asked man not to drink of it. Or God could have put a circle in the centre of the garden and asked man not to look into it. Why should he create a tree with a fruit?
The usefulness of a fruit is when it is eaten by a person. If a fruit has been created by God, its use is to be eaten. Similarly the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was created by God so that man can eat it. To understand this, we can see that man gets the power to reproduce physically at a certain age. A child cannot do this activity. Even after attaining puberty, still man has to reach a certain age to become eligible to get married.
Similarly, God had in his mind to give this fruit to man – This was god’s plan A converning man. When man sinned, this plan was scrapped and the next plan was put into use by God. On the contrary, man can never become like God by doing nothing. Hence comparing God and man in this matter is improper.

Tree of knowledge of good and evil
Dear brother in Christ, I am happy to receive your comment.
Regarding the tree of knowledge of good and evil and the fruit of knowledge of good and evil it is necessary to learn about the dispensations. We are living in the dispensation of Grace, and prior to this dispensation was Dispensation of Law (Mosaic Law), and prior to that was Dispensation of Conscience, and Prior to that was Dispensation of Innocence. Adam and Eve were created by God Almighty and God of Love in this dispensation, and they were innocent and they were not knowing between good and bad. So for such innocent people God also gave them very simple commandment. For babe like people God gave commandment in their food itself. Eat all the fruits of the trees in the garden except only one tree of knowledge of good and evil which was in the middle of the garden (Gen. 2:16,17) (Gen. 3:3). Their reward for obeying the commandment also of lesser glory when compared to the Dispensation of Grace. Their reward also was created in the beginning (Matt. 25:34) and it is supposed to be New Earth.
When Adam Eve disobeyed God’s simple commandment due to the subtlety of the devil in disguise of serpent, loving God arranged for their salvation and covered their nakedness with coats of skin and clothed them (Gen.3:21). It is understood to have a coats of skin an animal must have been slain (Rev.13:8). God send them out because the sinner if eats the fruit of life will never die and his sins will not have an end.
When Adam and Eve came out of the Garden of Eden, their conscience of Good and Evil started to work as came to know the Good and Evil. From that period to Moses it was called as Dispensation of Conscience and their reward is also expected to be New Earth.
The spiritual standard of man was steadily growing and they were grown to a standard to receive written commandments of God. As their standard was grown, the chastisement was also greater, and their spiritual maturity was less compared to Dispensation of Grace and hence the chastisement was severe as eye to eye tooth to tooth and life to life. As the commandments are superior their reward also is great, and the saints of the Dispensation of Law receive New Heaven, which was also already prepared from the beginning (John 14:2).
Next and the latest is the dispensation of Grace in which we live. Here the commandments are written by the Spirit of God in our hearts as Spiritual Commandments, when we receive the anointing of the Holy Spirit, which was told by our Lord Jesus in a parable as Born of the Spirit (John 3:3-5). In this dispensation the spiritual commandments are superior and the reward also the highest in heaven as New Jerusalem and Zion which was not prepared yet but Jesus told his disciples that he will go and prepare (John 14: 3). In this dispensation the spiritual maturity is the greatest and man can grow to the very standard of Jesus Christ in character and followed by power (Matt. 5:48) (Colo. 1:28).
So for the beginners (Adam and Eve) God gave them very simple commandment in their food itself.
Hope your comment is answered about fruit of knowledge of good and evil.
